The Historic Old Ursuline Convent in New Orleans' French Quarter will host an exhibition of Sculpture in Terra-Cotta, in the fall of 2008, created by the noted Spanish artist, Dr. Javier Morales. The Exhibition will consist of twenty-six (26) pieces of his highly acclaimed work, described as" profoundly human and full of energy and sentiment. The exhibition will be open to the public and follows an extremely successful presentation in the historic Convent of mosaic art from the Vatican last year. The Convent is the oldest existing building in the Mississippi Valley. The announcement of the Exhibition was made by the Reverend Monsignor Crosby Kern, Director of the Archdiocesan Cultural Heritage Center, the managing and governing body which directs both the historic old convent and the Saint Louis Cathedral. "We are delighted to bring this exciting exhibit to our City and to the Convent, a City of strong Spanish roots," Monsignor Kern stated. As a sculptor, Dr. Morales has worked primarily in terra-cotta and bronze. Since l980, he has held individual exhibitions in Madrid on a regular basis. Carlos Pietrangeli, in l989 as Director of the Vatican Museums, wrote: "Morales' works are both classic and modern with the unmistakably original mark of a great artistic personality." Morales' works are found in private collections, as well as the Royal Collections of Spain. In l995, he was commissioned by the Cathedral of Madrid to create a monumental set of sculptures entitled "The Mystical Life." He has recently been commissioned to create additional sculptures for the Cathedral and also completed his monumental study on the great sixteenth-century palace/monastery, EL Escorial. Dr. Morales, from l975 to l981, served as Deputy Director of the Internationally renowned Prado Museum in Madrid, Spain, and was founding member of the Foundacion Amigos del Museo (Friends of the Prado Museum), a private foundation designed to assist the Prado Museum in its broad cultural activities and the acquisition of art works. One of the most important positions that Dr. Morales has held in his professional life has been as Commissioner of Crown Heritage Exhibitions from the Royal Palace of Madrid. Their aim has been to present great Spanish art as a symbol of Western Culture and the values that Spain took to America. "The presence of the Morales exhibition will serve as a tribute to the remarkable Spanish heritage of New Orleans. Pere Antoine, who earned great respect in the old City as a Rector of the Cathedral, was actually Spanish, and his name was Antonio. To this date much of the City's fabled French Quarter remains Spanish in its architectural style and historicity.
