Son muchas las formas de ejercer la solidaridad si en las personas subyace una actitud de apertura al otro. El voluntariado es una de esas formas, una más. Siendo sinceros, no podemos deslumbrarnos por los efectos mediáticos del voluntariado social. Los voluntarios tenemos buena prensa, aparecemos en programas de televisión como modelos sociales, el voluntariado abandera en buena medida el movimiento solidario.

Es una manera importante de producirse como persona íntegra que ejerce su responsabilidad social. Pero no nos dejemos seducir por este éxito de imagen. El voluntariado es una actividad subsidiaria de otras. Un voluntario multiplicará su eficacia si desarrolla su servicio coordinado por un trabajador social o dentro de unos planes diseñados por profesionales multidisciplinares.

Por otro lado, sería un error lamentable oscurecer la labor solidaria tradicional de los vecinos, familiares o ciudadanos en general que, sin pertenecer a una organización, son movidos por un sentimiento que los conduce a ayudar informal y cordialmente allí donde hay una necesidad y atenúan con su labor muchos problemas sociales. ¡Cuánto más eficaz es el buen vecino de enfrente para una persona mayor sola que un voluntario que debe desplazarse una vez a la semana desde la otra esquina de la ciudad! No es preciso preguntarse por qué el voluntariado social ha crecido tanto en las grandes ciudades, ya que es allí donde las relaciones sociales se han deteriorado con mayor intensidad. En ambientes rurales es mucho más difícil encontrar personas abandonadas o solas. La Ley de Voluntariado deja fuera de su cobertura las acciones de beneficencia individual. No consideramos este hecho como un elogio de la labor de los voluntarios por encima de otras formas de ayuda, sino una simple distinción jurídica entre actividades complementarias. El voluntariado no sólo no compite con las fórmulas profesionales o espontáneas de la solidaridad, sino que, muy al contrario, las alienta para que existan redes fuertes de apoyo a los más débiles.

En otro sentido, el trabajo del voluntario individual es imprescindible y la responsabilidad que él ejerza o el bien que haga, quedarán sin hacer si él no lo se pone manos a la obra. Pero todo voluntario debe considerarse como parte de una red, porque la solidaridad no puede quedar sujeta a un ser contingente como lo somos cualquier voluntario social que hoy estamos y mañana podemos no estar.
